Welding and Fabrication

Arc Alloys started out in 1988 and during our first decade, we concentrated on becoming industry leaders in the supply of welding consumables to various industries, including the special metal, maintenance and repair industries. Then from 1998 onwards, welding and fabrication services were established at the heart of our business activity. Today we have an unparalleled reputation for manufacturing high quality products that function superbly, to incredibly stringent degrees of accuracy, even in severe environments an example of this is our alloy welding.

What exactly is welding and fabrication?

It is quite common for the terms ‘welding’ and ‘fabrication‘ to be used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Welding is the joining together, or fusing, of two or more pieces of metal (or other materials) that have closely comparable compositions and melting points. Fabrication is the entire process of fabricating or creating a metal product from scratch. This includes everything from design and layout to forming and finishing.

What processes are involved in welding and fabrication?

As welding is a technique of forming metal, it goes together naturally with sheet metal fabrication, and both trades use very similar processes to create the final product, including processes such as bending and assembling.

There are of course various different welding methods, including TIG (the most common type of welding in fabrication workshops), oxy acetylene and gas metal arc welding.

As sheet metal fabrication is the main process, however, it can be broken down into many different sub-processes, including:

  • Stamping
  • Die cutting
  • Shrinking
  • Hydroforming
  • Stretching
  • Roll forming
  • Spinning
  • Finishing

At Arc Alloys, all our welding processes and procedures are certified by independent authorities and comply with international standards that include ASME IX and ISO 15614.

Commonly used materials at Arc Alloys

The procedures we follow use a large variety of material grades, which include the following:

  • Carbon Steels
  • Carbon Steels with P.W.H.T.
  • Low – Temperature Carbon Steel (A333 Grade 6)
  • CrMo Steels (P11)
  • 300 Series Stainless Steel (304, 316, 321,347)
  • Duplex
  • Super Duplex
  • Inconel 625
  • Hastelloy C276
  • Carpenter 20
  • Monel 60 (Alloy 400)
  • Titanium

Some of our procedures also make use of additional testing to meet customer specific requirements e.g. G28A, G48A corrosion tests (BP Wood Group, Chevron etc.)

Welding processes

At Arc Alloys we also pride ourselves on keeping up-to-date with the latest technology and techniques, ensuring that our welding services are absolutely cutting edge. Methods we currently employ include:

  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding – MIG, MAG (GMAW)
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Plasma Arc Welding (PAW)
  • Brazing / Silver Brazing (TB)

Manufactured products

Finally, products we commonly manufacture include:

  • Pressure Vessels — vessels made from special alloys, or to specialised design requirements, used in Onshore, Offshore and Nuclear applications
  • “Y-Type” and “T-Type” Strainers — used in filtration and process industries
  • Inlet / Outlet Header Assemblies — used in heat transfer
  • Access Fittings — made from various alloys, including exotic, and used in process piping for chemical injection and corrosion monitoring.
  • Floats and Vibrating Forks / Magnetic and Vibrating Level Switches — used wherever fluid measurement and control is required.
